Description

A comforting dish that combines the rich flavors of Salisbury steak with the savory sweetness of caramelized onions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 large onions, sliced
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (Swiss or provolone)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, finely chopped onion, egg, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix gently until just combined and shape into patties.
  2. Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat, add sliced onions, and cook with a pinch of salt for about 15 minutes until they turn golden brown.
  3. Remove onions, and in the same skillet, brown the beef patties for 4-5 minutes on each side.
  4. Add caramelized onions back to the skillet, pour in beef broth, and sprinkle thyme. Simmer gently.
  5. After 10 minutes, sprinkle shredded cheese over patties, cover, and let the cheese melt.
  6. Plate the patties with gravy on top and serve hot.

Notes

Use fresh ingredients for the best flavor. Let the patties rest before serving for juiciness.
